W3: AmI Technologies for WellBeing at Home
Organizers
  • Johan Plomp (VTT Electronics)
  • Paolo Tealdi (Independent Consultant)
Abstract [Full program - pdf]     [Day program - pdf]
The quality of life of any person, young or old, heavily depends on the efficiency, comfort and cosiness of the place he or she calls home. Ambient Intelligence has profiled itself as a methodology that aims to provide this kind of easy living while keeping the actual technology in the background. This workshop intends to bring together experts to study and discuss on visions, technologies and applications that have been developed particularly to facilitate living at home. It welcomes contributions related to four main themes:
  1. Home environment control and automation
  2. Personalised entertainment applications for the home as a multi-user environment
  3. Applications to support elderly people in their homes
  4. Health care and personal security at home.
The workshop will consist of participant presentations, discussions and demonstrations and aim to identify key research topics in the field of AmI that support wellbeing at home.

Submission Information
Participants wishing to share their ideas and research at the workshop, reflecting the issues raised by the workshop proposal, are encouraged to submit a 2 to 4 page position paper which will be reviewed by the workshop organizers:
  • Please format position papers using the ACM SIGCHI Template. (http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigchi/chipubform/ )
  • Please submit your position papers to the Workshop Committee. (chairs-w3@eusai.net)

W4: Ambient Intelligence: In the Service of Man?
Organizers
  • Rinie van Est (Rathenau Institute)
Abstract [Full program - pdf]
Ambient intelligence applications will have a profound impact on various societal sectors. The claim of the ambient intelligence vision is that it is in the service of man. The challenge is to make that claim come true. For this it is necessary to complement the technical perspective on ambient intelligence with a societal perspective. The workshop wants to do that with respect to the field of health care and surveillance. There will be room for both critical assessment of the general assumptions behind ambient intelligence, as well as constructive assessment of the ongoing trials and applications that are already (being introduced) on the market. In this way an open dialogue between engineers and social scientists is encouraged.
